Inky: The best writing tip I have ever received was from my partner. I was considering taking a course in ‘discovering my writing voice’ at a nearby college and threw it out one evening during conversation.
His smile quickly turned into a frown and he deliberately sat his drink on the coffee table, took my hands in his and looking me straight in the eye, told me there was nothing that needed fixing with my writing voice. The only thing I needed to do, he said, was to ‘put it on paper’.
“The hardest part is always going to be getting on with putting it on paper. It will take courage, blind faith, doggedness, sitting down in front of your weapon of choice, and just doing it.”
My partner was a smart man. He was also an editor.
